Fire Ant: Facts, Identification & Control

Argentine Ant

Characteristics:

Workers are polymorphic; body length ranging from 3-5mm. Body is red-orange brown, head brown.

Diet:

Omnivorous ground nesting ant.



Reproduction:

A queen is generally the largest individual in the colony. Her primary function is reproduction; she may live for 6 to 7 years and can produce up to 3,500 eggs in a single day. That is roughly 9 million in her lifetime.

As Pest:

Occur in agricultural areas, coastland, disturbed areas, natural forest, planted forests, range/grasslands, riparian zones, scrub/shrublands, urban areas. Most prevalent in insolated areas.
Omnivorous ground nesting ant, preferring sunny, open areas or partially shaded ones. In a field nests may be moved to the perimeter of the crop when the canopy closes and shades the ground Ants may affect fruit/pods, growing points, seeds, stems, vegetative organs and the whole plant.
Pest management:
Spraying with pesticides .
